Primary

Course Work

Subjects taught at the primary school level include English, Mathematics, General Awareness, and a second language (Tamil, Hindi or Malayalam). All languages are taught with a balanced emphasis on both the written as well as the spoken aspects. “General Awareness” is a combination of Science, Social Studies and Environmental Studies and encompasses what we believe a child should be aware of at every age. We have formulated our own syllabus for General Awareness with an emphasis on activity-based learning. The activities include the use of audio-visual aids, art, craftwork, map work, experiments, field trips, projects and group discussions. These activities are followed by extensive written work. At the primary level, in addition to the course work, time has been allocated for Life Skills, General Knowledge, Reading and Spoken English. Also, once a week, children have a substantial amount of time allocated for various school related activities. These include Junior day (singing, elocution and declamation) and Junior Annual Day (play practice, singing and dance).

Integrated Information Technology

All students, starting from Class I, have practical lessons on using the computer. The aim is to ensure that by the time the child graduates from the primary section, they will have a working knowledge of how to operate a computer, and learn the basics of word processing, multimedia and graphics. All exercises on the computer are correlated with the lessons taught in class in order to enhance the child’s understanding of the various subjects.

Homework and Remedial Work

It is policy of the school that all work should be completed in school at the primary level. At the end of every day, one period is assigned where revision work is assigned under the supervision of the class teachers. On Saturdays, time is also allotted for students who need remedial work. These children, are coached free of cost. After school hours, all children are encouraged to spend their free time reading and improving their language skills.

Assessment

No formal tests are conducted. After every topic, a review is conducted and the performance of the student is noted at this time. The aim is to ensure that the students have understood the course work and do not resort to rote learning. Thus, the students are continuously assessed and all subject teachers give a detailed report at the end of every term. The class teacher, the co-ordinator of the primary section and the principal continuously monitor each child’s performance. Commendations are issued on a weekly basis to encourage the children to excel in academics. Certificates and medals are awarded at the end of the year to the most promising students.
